Our History

Picture
QCinema is Fort Worth's source for the best in gay and lesbian film. Founded in 1998 by Shawn Moore and Todd Camp, QCinema’s early origins included occasional community screenings and a film discussion group at Texas Christian University before Moore suggested that it be expanded into a full-fledged, four-day festival in July of 1999. It has since evolved to become the presenter of a year-round series of events including monthly film screenings, live programs, fund-raisers and, of course, our annual film festival, now in its 21st year. Q Cinema  is a non-profit, 501(c)3.

Best Film Series
Critic’s choice: QCinema
Is it really possible that we’ve never given Q this award? (Technically, we tied for audience choice for Best Film Series back in 2006, but who’s counting?) What started out as an annual film festival has expanded into a monthly series with an inclusive spirit that takes in all facets of the LGBT community. The series, which usually splits time between Four Day Weekend Theater and Rose Marine Theater, is known not merely for the films themselves, but also as a gathering place and rallying point for Tarrant County’s gay culture.

Best Place to Meet
Someone of the Same Sex
Critic’s choice: QCinema’s monthly screenings and annual festival
In a city where the lesbian and gay scene is small and unpredictable, Fort Worth’s 10-year-old film festival dedicated to queer images in international dramas, comedies, docu-mentaries, animation, and short films provides a welcome gathering spot for birds of a lavender-colored feather. To be sure, QCinema’s mission is film first, meat market a distant second. But we can’t think of a better opening line at a Q party or reception than “So what did you think of that movie?”

Best Place to Meet Someone of the Same Sex
Critic’s choice: QCinema’s monthly screenings and annual festival
The Fort’s annual film festival for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered audiences (and their straight pals) celebrated its ninth year in May. The late-spring festival itself offers numerous receptions and parties for the same-sex-lovin’ crowd, but QCinema also has monthly screenings throughout the year, and the pre- and post-screening receptions for these offer the chance for unofficial speed-dating kinds of chat with others seeking The Love That’s Finally Able to Speak its Name.
