After watching this touching, funny, erotic adventure from director Alfonso Cuaron, the thought of the Mexican filmmaker at the helm of the third Harry Potter adventure might seem a little bizarre. Sure, he shows a particular brilliance for depicting the tight bond between a pair of young men on the road to adulthood, with a spunky older woman to help guide them through some difficult sexual situations. But what's that got to do with a bunch of pre-adolescent wizards and witches? Oh, well, there's no denying that Cuaron works plenty of magic in this beautifully filmed and surprisingly moving story. Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna deliver vibrant performances as the hormonally overactive teens, with Maribel Verdu turning in a haunting portrayal as the woman who teaches them about love and life. Uplifting and devastating, titillating yet moralistic, it's the kind of film that will stick with you for days. The DVD includes an unrated version, director and cast commentary, the original theatrical trailer, deleted scenes, a short film, a making-of featurette and widescreen format.
