Treading Water (2001)

Director: Lauren Himmel

QQ1/2

A longshorewoman and her social worker girlfriend face family drama when the two unravel emotions while unwrapping presents with one of the women's judgmental, well-to-do New England family. Heavy-handed and overly dramatic, this fairly familiar tale of seasonal misery is rendered all the more dreary through its almost complete lack of humor, which makes for an awfully depressing holiday film. Sure, it's probably a lot closer to reality, but that doesn't make it any more fun to sit through. DVD extras: Director and actor commentaries; extended scene; photo gallery; trailer; widescreen format.
