Survivor: The Complete First Season
QQQQ
On the heels of the wrap-up of Survivor: All Stars
comes this complete collection of the first season of the groundbreaking
reality series. Of the 16 original contestants, indelible characters emerged,
including the crusty Rudy Boesch, the abrasive Sue Hawk, the emotional Jenna
Lewis and everyone's favorite gay naked fat guy (and ultimate winner) Richard
Hatch. Though historically, the conceited and overly cocky Hatch is still
considered one of the show's greatest love-to-hate-him villains, but his
courageous sharing of his sexuality with his tribemates (not to mention
is proclivity for walking around in the buff) made for real drama on the
show, especially when grouchy former marine Boesch was forced to deal with
the idea of sharing his beach with a homo. Most importantly, Hatch and company
set the bar so high that none of the subsequent seven seasons has surpassed
it. Hate it if you must, but don't deny its influence as one of the most
defining TV series of this generation. The five-disc set includes audio
commentaries, featurettes on the trip to the island, David Letterman's Survivor
Top Ten and a look back at the series and full-screen format.
