Jochen Hick (Sex Life in L.A., Men Maniacs) wrote and directed this ambitious and exciting crime drama centering on a German medical student's increasingly dangerous involvement with a gay serial killer. Set entirely in San Francisco, the story follows Stefan (Tom Wlaschiha), a handsome but solemn young man visiting the city to do research on his theory that the government unleashed the HIV virus that causes AIDS. His investigation leads him to the darkly erotic world of gay sex clubs and, later, into the city-wide investigation into the seemingly random serial killings of long-time AIDS-survivors. Along the way he attracts the attention of both an unconventional female detective and Jeffrey, a mysterious stranger he meets in a club. Rated R. Germany, 2000, 108 min., 35mm, color.
