With the impressive talents behind the camera (director
Richard Benjamin and Jeffery writer Paul Rudnick) and in front of
it (stars Lisa Kudrow and Damon Wayans), you'd think this lightweight rap
parody might have fared better. Kudrow is a well-meaning Jewish socialite
who tries to civilize a raunchy rap star (Wayans) when the controversy surrounding
his new album threatens to destroy her daddy's (Benjamin) record company.
Though white-meets-black rap comedies were passe three years ago (which
is when this picture was first slated to be released), there are some inspired
moments, especially gay composer Marc Shaiman's hilarious musical numbers.
His homoerotic boy-band spoofs -- performed by the aptly named Boyz R Us
-- are an absolute scream.
