Q CINEMA PRESENTS TEXAS PREMIERE OF SUNDANCE FAVE
Continuing its rich tradition
of being the first to introduce Texas to new gay and lesbian titles, Q Cinema
is proud to present the Lone Star premiere of the new drama Loggerheads,
one of the buzz titles from this year's Sundance Film Festival.
Screened during a recent field trip to Philadelphia's
gay film fest, the fourth largest in the country, Q planners wasted no time
in securing a chance to share this very special film with North Texas audiences.
"It is truly a beautiful film," says
artistic director Todd Camp. "And it took me about five seconds to
decide to bring it back to Cowtown. I was astounded that after watching
it with two other staff members, each of us connected with the film in entirely
different ways. Beautifully acted and attractively filmed, Loggerheads
should be a deeply affecting experience for any audience, gay or straight."
In a North Carolina beach town, lonely motel manager,
George (Michael Kelly), befriends a new arrival: the attractive vagabond,
Michael (Kip Pardue). While claiming to be in town to protect the endangered
Loggerhead turtles, Michael may actually be running away from something.
Elsewhere in the state, preacher's wife Elizabeth (Tess Harper) notices
that a pair of gay men has just moved across the street. Elizabeth is appalled
by this and another recent neighborhood development, but her feelings are
masking an even deeper disturbance. Another woman, Grace (Bonnie Hunt),
is also coming to terms with a deep down pain -- she gave up a child for
adoption many years ago. So she comes back to her hometown with hopes --
and help from a pseudo-detective -- to find him. Making his narrative feature
debut, Tim Kirkman (The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me) cleverly shuffles
three sets of characters and timelines (pay attention for hints indicating
which is which) that eventually intersect in a powerful, profound way. A
humanistic and gifted auteur, Kirkman coaxes sublime performances from all
of his leads, including earthy and sexy upcoming indie star Pardue.
Tickets for this one-night-only screening are $7, $5
for students and are available at the venue beginning an hour before showtime.
The film screens at the Four Day Weekend Theater at 312 Houston St. downtown,
next door to the Reata restaurant. For more information call (817) 462-3368.
