Leather Jacket Love Story

Midnight Saturday, July 10, 1999, Caravan of Dreams theater

This provocative gay romantic comedy for the '90s follows 18-year-old Kyle (Sean Tataryn), a would-be poet who abandons guppie life to move to L.A.'s funky Silverlake district. Cruising the coffee shops and poetry readings for inspiration, he encounters an older, leather-clad carpenter called Mike (TCU graduate Christopher Bradley), a randy sort whose no-holds-barred come-ons both frightens and excites him.

Hot sex ensues, but the two quickly develop beyond trick status and their unconventional relationship draws criticism from both their circles of friends Mike's current beau (Hector Mercado) is none too pleased about being replaced by a younger man, and Kyle's bitchy buddy (Geoffrey Moody) doesn't approve of his pal dating "dinosaurs." Director David DeCoteau, whose previous films include exploitation fluff like Puppet Master III, I Was a Teenage Sex Mutant and Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama, peppers the cast with fun and funky bit players, including drag queens Ruby Tuesday and Moist Towlette, along with John Waters regular Mink Stole as a smarmy poetry maven and Nicholas Worth as a pretentious performer. Certainly not for all tastes, but fun for the afterdark crowd. Not rated. No one under 17 will be admitted. USA, 1998, 100 min. video, b&w.
