The Laramie Project (2001)

Writer/Director: Moises Kaufman

QQQ1/2

A film that resonates with the power of Boys Don't Cry has yet to be made about the brutal murder of Matthew Shepard, an event that unified the world's gay community seemingly overnight. This HBO adaptation of the original off-Broadway play comes close, recounting the story through more than 200 interviews conducted with Laramie residents before, during and after the trials of the two boys who killed Shepard. The all-star cast -- including Peter Fonda, Steve Buscemi, Laura Linney, Janeane Garofalo and Christina Ricci -- manages not to distract from the devastating words of the people who were there. The DVD includes filmmaker commentary and full- and widescreen formats.
