Keep the River on Your Right: A Modern Cannibal's
Tale
(2000, R)
QQQ1/2
Directors: Laurie Gwen Shapiro, David Shapiro
Fascinating and touching documentary about 78-year-old Tobias Schneebaum, who returns to visit the New Guinea jungle he once called home and encounters his former lover, a male tribesman he assumed was long dead. Much more is made of Schneebaum's culturally forced dabbling with cannibalism. But it's a credit to sibling filmmakers David and Laurie Gwen Shapiro that they were able to persuade this elderly gentleman not only to share candidly the difficult memories of this adventure but also to return to their origin. DVD extras include deleted scenes; photo/sketch gallery; filmmaker and star biographies; full-screen format.
