Further Tales of the City (2002)

Seems as if none of the follow-ups to the original ground-breaking,
controversial PBS adaptation of Armistead Maupin's San Francisco series
of newspaper columns has managed to recapture the original spark that made
the first Tales such a phenomenon. Casting changes when the series
moved to Showtime have nagged at fans, though cable has made Maupin's more
adult-oriented storylines far more easily realized. This third edition introduces
everything from the goings-on in a Nevada brothel to the reappearance of
mass murderer Jim Jones. Still worth a look if only for the outstanding
troupe of regular players including Laura Linney and Olympia Dukakis. This
two-disc DVD includes "Now & then: styles from the '70s & '80s"
featurette, behind-the-scenes footage, Barbary Lane blueprints and drawings,
filmographies, weblink, alternate scenes, audio commentary and widescreen
format.
