Freshman Orientation

9 p.m. Friday, June 1, Rose Marine Theater
Director: Ryan Shiraki
U.S.A., 2004, 93 min.

A typical Midwestern 18-year-old freshman at a large state university eager to delve into the college party life, instead discovers that school is not the beer-driven, sexual fantasy of his imagination. Determined to do anything to obtain the girl of his dreams (a gorgeous but reluctant sorority girl), he decides to adopt a gay identity in order to insinuate himself into her life. The casual charade, however quickly lands him in a morass of campus activism, gender warfare, fraternity hazes, sorority torture, "coming out" narratives, political martyrdom and, ultimately, a university-wide meltdown.
College newbie Clay (Sam Huntington) is virtually invisible in the eyes of the women on campus. Yet when a beautiful sorority pledge, Amanda (Kaitlin Doubleday), is challenged to make a homosexual guy fall in love with her, Clay decides to take advantage of the opportunity. But how does he convince her he's gay? Clay finds a tutor in the fine art of faggotry in Rodney (a hysterically flaming John Goodman), a local gay bar owner, but -- of course! -- the ruse goes awry, causing campus chaos for students of all sexualities. Originally titled Home of Phobia when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2004, writer/director Ryan Shiraki's hilarious Freshman Orientation bears a delicious similarity to last year's straight-plays-gay comedy hit Eating Out. Add many wickedly twisted jabs at identity politics, and bitingly funny supporting turns from out actress Heather Matarazzo and Rachel Dratch, and you've got one orientation program worth enrolling in!
