Beverly Kills
SOUTHWEST PREMIERE
7 and 9 p.m. Sanders Theatre, $7
Beverly Kills is an outrageous and colorful concoction that slinks fiendishly between farce and tender romance. Maverick writer/director Damion Dietz (award-winning creator of 2003 Q Award winner Neverland) has crafted a uniquely uplifting gay love story wrapped in a wickedly-paced satire. When Beverly Jackson (an enthusiastic, sanity-challenged cross-dresser) auditions for the Pride Playhouse's production of "Balls Out" (a gay revue featuring a politically-charged same-sex marriage ballet and gratuitous full frontal nudity), she is callously rejected and vows to exact her revenge. On the advice of Rocco, her swarthy masseur, Beverly assembles a bizarre cult of Hollywood rejects and wannabes to help her execute a half-baked "plan" to get noticed and get even. Enter Shane, an overly guarded boy who "temporarily" lives and works out of the Pride Playhouse. When Shane's shallow boyfriend dumps him, Shane is welcomed into the supporting arms of Ray, the optimistic young lighting designer at the theater. Just as the romance between the two ignites, and just as Ray begins to convince Shane to "lighten up" and stop worrying about the things he can't control, the two lovers are inadvertently thrust into the center of Beverly Jackson's insane plot -- a plot that has spiraled out of control and escalated into the realm of terrorism! Featuring a gorgeous cast of young and talented newcomers, the film takes an iconoclastic stab at Tinseltown and the "cult of celebrity." Fast, funny and shockingly sexy, Beverly Kills sparkles -- signaling Damion Dietz as a one-of-a-kind comedic filmmaker with a wry eye for romance.
