It's Elementary
with Sexual Exiles and Acceptance
10 p.m. Friday, July 9 , 1999, Caravan of Dreams theater
This powerful film from Oscar-winning documentarian Debra Chasnoff (for 1991's Deadly Deception) has been stirring up a little trouble in the Metroplex lately. Though originally slated to air on KERA/Channel 13, the local PBS affiliate canceled its plans to broadcast the film after vocal right wingers complained.
It's a good thing we're a little more thick-skinned around here. The film offers a look at what happens when teachers address lesbian and gay issues in the classroom. Find out why the San Francisco Examiner says it, "Could become one of the most important films ever devoted to gay and lesbian issues." USA, 1996, 78 min., 16 mm, color.
Director: Debra Chasnoff; Producers: Debra Chasnoff, Helen Cohen
We close the evening with two short subjects: producer/director Irene Sosa's Sexual Exiles (USA, 30 min., video, color.) about the impossibility of returning home for gays and lesbians once they've come out while living in exile; and Chris Line's Acceptance (USA, 28 min., 16mm, b&w) which offers a stark slice of life centering on a lonely alcoholic's quest for love and healing.
