Despite the hand-wringing surrounding the NC-17 rating slapped on director Bernardo Bertolucci's visually arresting story of an American student (Michael Pitt of Hedwig and the Angry Inch fame) who gets mixed up in the sordid lifestyle of two French siblings in the late 1960s, this film is nowhere near as shocking as you might have heard. Hints of bisexuality and incest are just that, hints, and despite the ample use of nudity there's nothing here that really elevates this from mimicking the kind of frou-frou art fare this trio enjoys at the local cinemateque into something truly dangerous and original. The NC-17 version features a bit more full-frontal male nudity, including an especially nice closeup shot of Pitt's privates. That is, if you like that kind of thing (and you know we do). The DVD includes filmmaker commentaries, historical and making-of featurettes, a music video and widescreen format. It's available in R and NC-17 versions.
