Burnt Money (Plata Quemada) (2002)
Director: Marcelo Pineyro
QQQ1/2
Marcelo Pineyro's gritty thriller based on a legendary piece of Argentine crime history emerges as a gay Bonnie and Clyde of sorts, with smoldering stars Eduardo Noriega (The Devil's Backbone) and Leonardo Sbaraglia as gay lovers known as "the twins" who are part of a gang of bank robbers on the lam after a particularly violent heist. Sexy, violent and beautifully filmed, this operatic drama takes a number of cinematic risks and pulls them all off brilliantly. The characters' off-kilter behavior is a bit jarring at times, but both leads are riveting. DVD extras include the original theatrical trailer and widescreen format. This film is unrated and contains graphic violence, nudity, sexual situations and depictions of drug use.
