Martin Sherman adapts his award-winning and ground-breaking play about the Nazi persecution of homosexuals into an interesting film, but not an altogether pleasing one. Clive Owen is a decadent Berlin clubgoer snatched from the streets by the SS and shipped to the concentration camps, where he strikes up an unusual but nonetheless powerful bond with fellow prisoner Lothaire Bluteau. Though dreary, brutal and horribly depressing, the film is a powerful glimpse into this little-known side of the Holocaust while demonstrating the significance of the pink triangle to the gay community. I just wish it did a better job of it. R (graphic violence, adult subject matter, nudity, profanity)
