VIDEO OF THE WEEK
Bad Education
QQQQ
Gay director Pedro Almodovar has been so enamored
with women in his past few films that his latest effort, lovingly focused
on the male form for a change, comes across as nothing short of a revelation.
Gael Garcia Bernal smolders in multiple roles, including a struggling actor
who reunites with a childhood friend (Fele Martinez) who has suddenly become
a successful young filmmaker. The two decide to collaborate on a somewhat
biographically based story about a painful childhood experience they might
have shared. Slapped with an undeserved NC-17 rating, Bad Education
still emerges as one of the most sexually charged pictures in recent memory
-- but it's not what you see (there is no full-frontal nudity), it's what
you think you see and how it makes you feel. The continually twisting story
line will keep you on your toes, even if the picture's "what happens
next" conclusion is a bit unsatisfying. But the film is gorgeous and
its stars even more so. Welcome back, Pedro. The DVD includes director's
commentary, deleted scenes, making-of featurette, poster gallery; AFI tribute
and red-carpet footage and is in widescreen format.
