A boldly compassionate look at gender ambiguity, this documentary examines an often misunderstood sub-culture through the journey of one transsexual woman. In 1994, Parris Patton drove a two-man crew to the corner of Santa Monica and La Brea in Hollywood, Calif. It was there that he met Stacey "Hollywood" Dean and began what was to become a four-year chronicle of Stacey's odyssey into womanhood. Deep into her transformation, Stacey returns home to North Carolina, hoping for, but not counting on, acceptance from her ultra-religious parents. In the end this is a compelling, no-holds-barred account of a brave, young transsexual woman who seems to be the only one certain of her identity. USA, 2002, 76 min., video, not rated -- R equivalent.
